Effects of nutrition on pediatric development

The aim of child nutrition is to provide a healthy growth and development, in other words to enable physical and cognitive changes. In this way, the bodily size of a child increases, cell structures and functions, motor and cognitive skills, sensory and social behaviors mature. The correct nutrition, socio-economical level, environment, cultural factors and genetics affect growth. Lack of or imbalanced nutrition in childhood results in various health problems. Such lack of nutrition may cause disorders in learning, sight, hearing and speaking.

In this period, the nutrition and dietary habits of a child is affected mostly by family members. Therefore, healthy eating must be planned and implemented for the whole family. The requirements for developing children are more particular than grown-ups. As a result, eating a single type of food must be avoided and nutrition variety must be ensured.

The child must supply all his/her energy, protein, fat, vitamin and mineral needs from the essential nutrients in his/her daily food intake. 50-55% of the daily energy requirement must be supplied from carbohydrates, 15-20% from proteins and 30% from fats.

What is organic? What is organic food?

Certified organic foods must be grown without the use of GMOs (genetically-modified organisms), pesticides, antibiotics and hormones.

It is also better for the environment as it supports sustainability, soil contains more minerals that conventional farms.

The organic process starts from the soil and ends with the final product. It’s also been proven that organic food is more nutritious than conventional food. For example, organic food contains more Vitamin C and antioxidants that protect the plant, naturally.

Why should we consume organic products?

There are couple of things to do to support humans’ health, one and maybe the most important one is to eat healthy foods. Especially when you are a kid, by their nature, children are more sensitive to pesticides than adults. A child's body continues to grow until 18, and their brain and nervous system are under development until the age of 25. While their systems are growing it means that what they are exposed to, will grow in their body too.

Organic products contain far more vitamins, minerals and natural antioxidants as they lack other harmful substances. Organic products enhance the immune system, supports the resilience system. When shopping for organic products, it is important to shop in season. Tomatoes, squashes or cucumbers must not be eaten in winter just because they are organic. It is enforced by law and bylaws that produce with organic stickers must be certified. The production systems of these products must be supported by the independent audit and certification companies. The use of genetically modified organisms which can be harmful for both the environment and human health is forbidden in ecological farming. As hormones and other artificial substances are not used, they are more natural in structure and supportive for health.

It is beneficial for people with special nutritional needs, such as pregnant women and children to prefer organic products.
